Description
Yellowish-white or brownish in color, sometimes with reddish streaks and darker rays. The texture is coarse and the grain irregular. The density varies from 0.28 to 0.50. It tends to be short-lived.
Plant morphology
A medium-sized tree, reaching 8-10 m in height. The bark is dark gray-green. The deciduous leaves are bipinnate, 20-45 cm long. The flowers, very similar to those of mimosa, are petalless and composed of long, scented stamens, ranging from white to pinkish-yellow. The fruits are elongated legumes.

Countries of origin and distribution
East Asia: Azerbaijan, China, Korea. Introduced to Europe in the 18th century, it is an invasive species in Japan and the United States.
Habitat and ecology
It prefers regions with a distinctly continental climate, with harsh winters and very hot summers. It tolerates temperatures down to -25°C.

Used for hand joinery, packaging, matches, paper, foundry patterns and frames.
